Snapshot in History : Tuberculosis
"TB is spread when airborne droplets containing the organism are inhaled. An infected person expels the droplets by coughing, sneezing, talking or singing. These droplets can remain airborne and dangerous for hours after the cough or sneeze." (www.aarc.org)
"Nearly one-third of the world’s population is infected with Tuberculosis (TB), which kills almost 3 million people per year. TB causes more deaths than any other infectious agent in the world."
One thought quite a bit before giving a girl with TB a kiss on the lips. Many doctors suggested using gauze between the lips if kissing were necessary. From this ban on kissing, the practice of "Cousining" was born. (Chapter __)
Children always stayed on the other side of the room while visiting a tubercular parent.
Before the advent of streptomycin in the mid-forties, the basic cure consisted of rest of body and mind, lots to eat, and sitting on open air porches for at least 8 hours a day regardless of the weather. Some patients, in their desire to hasten recovery, opted to "Freeze It Out" which meant bundling up with only their noses exposed, and spending the below zero winter nights on a cure chair on an open porch with the promise that one winter was worth two summers.
When these simple measures didn’t produce a cure, it was felt that a diseased lung needed to rest completely. There was a penumothoroaxy procedure for this. A hollow needle would be passed between the ribs and 400cc of air would be pumped into the pleural cavity. That would compress the lung to a fraction of its size. This would be a repeated procedure as the air would be absorbed in the bloodstream.
A permanent and extreme attempt would be to actually remove ribs. Patients would then lie flat with heavy shot bags on their chest, forcing the diseased lung to shut down.
