Within a mile, Joe’s muscles loosened up and his heart thudded. The arctic air, creating tiny icicles on the hair in his nose, made it impossible to fill his lungs. When he opened his mouth to gulp air, his teeth ached at the cold.

He lost his rhythm. The toe of his left snowshoe sand in a deep drift. Instinctively he thrust out his arms as he fell, plunging shoulder deep in the snow. The short sleeves of the old jacket exposed his wrists and snow found its way into his mittens and up his sleeves.

"Horses! It’s the iceman." A chill ran down Alice’s back. Charlotte had told her more than once about the terror all tuberculars felt when the iceman was summoned to some cure cottage. Every patient knew it meant ice was need to stop a hemorrhage. Addice added her prayers to thos she was suyre other consumptives along Helen Hill were murmuring. One for the stricken consumptive. One in gratitude they had been apred for now.

"Oh, God!" Lilly said. "Suppose Dr. Hayes can’t stop it?"

The village of Lake Placid, NY. Sprawled on the far banks of Mirror Lake is the famous Lake Placid Club where Joe is employed as a mechanic for $9.15 a week, and Kate works as a waitress.

Alice began a deep productive cough. Hilda handed her the ugly tin sputum cup. I don’t have the strength to go through this again, Alice thought, perspiration beading her forehead at the effort. She felt a cool washcloth on her forehead. Hilda placed her other broad hand on the back of Alice’s neck, urging her to lean forward.

Finally Armand gave the signal. The Cadillac sprang to life as though eager as Joe to begin the night’s adventure. Joe thrilled at the sound of the powerful engine, rhythmical and confident, he thought. He cranked open the split windshield and adjusted goggles comfortably over his eyes.

"Don’t be a smartass, Devlin." He poked Joe’s chest with his stubby sausage finger. "I know what the Rule Book says. I know it says we do everything we can to give the guests a memorable vacation. If those ladies request you, they get you."
