Snapshot in History : Adirondacks
Adirondack is Iroquois for "bark eaters." A section was also called "couchsachrage" which means Dismal Wilderness as it was a good hunting grounds but Indians did not care to live there.

New York State owns 2.5 million acres which is larger than Yellowstone, but only 40% of its 6 million acres. The park is larger than Massachusetts and Rhode Island combined.

There are 43 high peaks. The lowest is 4,000ft; the highest is Mt. Marcy at 5,344 ft. Whiteface Mt, with its eye-catching symmetrical shape, is probably the most photographed Adirondack Mt. It is 4,867ft. The Adirondack Mountains have been with us for one billion, one hundred million years.

There are over 2,000 lakes and ponds and more than 1000 miles of rivers.

Only 110 days between spring and fall frosts.
